Rasing Kids with Help from Books.

As a mom I struggle with finding balance. Many of us do. I discovered after having my son that parenthood is full of more challenges than they tell you about. You must find a new routine for everything.

My son is now 4 and life has still full of challenges. He is full of energy, and lately my husband and I have been working on finding ways to discipline and help him focus. He tends to be overwhelmed lately when we go to martial arts when he wasn’t before. I have a feeling part of that is due to the schedule change of no longer attending day care during the week. He’s strictly home with me all the time now. I didn’t realize it would be such a huge thing for him, but we are working through it.

I was talking with my best friend over the phone this week, she lives in a completely different state, and she suggested that I check out a book called 1-2-3 Magic. She and I had read Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, ED.D., together so we’ve frequently chatted about things that would benefit our kiddos.

When I was a child, life was different. With so much social media today many moms become discouraged about what they are doing for their kids. Is it the best, could it be better? We also struggle with the ever-present mom guilt. Using books like the above mentioned have helped me try out things that either work or don’t work. I like that the info is out there though because mom communities don’t exist like they once did.

So far many of the things I’ve read in 1-2-3 Magic have been working. We specifically are using the counting method for discipline and the charting system to for start behaviors. My 4-year-old has gone from not cleaning up his room and struggling to listening to doing both. Now it doesn’t work the same for everyone and it does take a lot of work on both ends but it’s totally worth it. You can check the books out below. I had to share my thoughts on these and also if you have any feedback drop me a comment. As a mom/parent we all need to stick together.
